Description

This is a copy of a surviving military horn that would have been made according to government specifications.  Mine is as close to the originals as I can make, but each one I make gets better!  The base is Cherry with a threaded finial to fill from the bottom.  The base plug is held in place with square cut nails like the originals.  It comes with a fiddle peg stopper made of rosewood and included is a 3/8 wide strap, not pictured. There is a staple in the top of the plug just like the original.  I do not recommend attaching your strap to the threaded finial.

This is an excellent horn for anyone portraying Colonial Line or former Colonial line.

Size: They will vary from 11-14 inches, not including the base plug which adds 3 inches.

Color: Will vary since they were made by contract.

A GOOD AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD MUSKET-SIZE POWDER HORN, ca. 1770: In overall Good+ condition with toned and smooth, naturally curved, cow horn surfaces and its original concave hardwood base-plug with a finely turned, removable, screw-type, wooden end-plug. The large sized and curved approx. 18″ cow horn body with an integrally turned and chip-carved pouring spout with straw/brown toned patina, an old tight hairline, at its base and some patches of gunpowder-staining. Concave hardwood base with an untouched dark age-patina and its original finely turned end-plug with a screw-type attachment and a bulbous knob— a side-mounted iron staple for the attachment of a suspension-cord. Very good base with some minor abrasions, untouched wooden surfaces and expected light handling marks. The body of the horn with smooth, richly toned and lightly oxidized natural cow horn surfaces and the noted tight age-crack/hairline. The base fastened with its original, square-cut, iron nails/tacks with some expected light staining. A nice example of an original American Revolutionary War Period Powder Horn with a nicely turned base-plug-end and untouched surfaces, ca. 1770.
