Description

This is based on the design presented by Robert Brisson and Chris Helsel in the most recent edition of the Horn Book.  As they mentioned in the article, this item was “rediscovered” as they are not sure of the origin.

This is a key piece of horn working tools that anyone who works horns by hand needs!  Many Horners use this mandrel to hold their horn in a vice for filing and scraping work.

The small end is 1.5 inches in diameter and goes in the vice, the two halves have a groove and a 3/8 dowel rod for a fulcrum.  As you tighten the vice on the small end it open up the “shaping cone” end tight on the horn so it won’t go anywhere.

Standard size is 2  x 2 1/2 for the horn end.  They are made of ash and very rugged for many years of use.  I hand ,are these so they are not “factory perfect” as if they came out of a CNC lathe.

If you need a different size on the shaping cone end, put it in the Order Notes.  Unless I find larger planking, the largest I can go is going to be roughly 2 3/4.
